Apple lifts VoIP ban over 3G networks; iCall is first iPhone app with 3G support

Looks like Apple’s got some other news going on besides all this iPad business, namely that they’ve lifted VoIP restrictions over 3G networks.

Up until now, iPhone users could only make VoIP calls over Wi-Fi networks. Well, Apple has swung open the cellular network doors and updated the smartphone’s SDK to allow developers to take advantage of this new function.

And with this, iCall has become the first and only (for the moment) iPhone/iPod Touch app to have functionality over the 3G network (and they did that remarkably fast…). Will Skype, Truphone and other similar calling apps get on board soon?
