Would you pay for a vanity URL on Facebook?

Facebook watchdog AllFacebook is reporting that the company is asking select users if they would be willing to pay for vanity URLs, such as “http://www.facebook.com/zdnet” or “http://www.facebook.com/andrewnusca”.

The site says a number of celebrities and high profile individuals have been granted profile URLs for free as a way to encourage them to update their Facebook public profiles more regularly, and standard users have been clamoring for them.

Would you pay for such a URL?

Personally, I don’t see the need. As long as Google points to the right place, it matters less and less what the URL is — certainly for individuals. As for companies, perhaps it holds value — but then again, isn’t it easy enough to search for your company on Facebook as it is? It is a semi-walled community after all.

Still, who wouldn’t want www.facebook.com/microsoft? (Sorry, taken.) Or www.facebook.com/stevejobs? Or how about www.facebook.com/linux? The possibilities are endless, and so is the price tag.

So how about it — would you pay for a Facebook vanity URL? Tell me why (or why not) in TalkBack.
