Would Palm dare roll out Pre a day before Apple's WWDC keynote?
MobileCrunch’s MG Siegler has a real saucy suggestion this morning, asking if Palm would dare roll out its Pre smartphone the day before Apple’s WWDC keynote.
If you’ll notice, it’s nearly May, and Palm has yet to disclose pricing or a release date for the Pre smartphone beyond the original “first half of 2009″ window, which is nearing quickly.
But now, Siegler says June 7 might be the date — which happens to be the day before a likely Apple keynote address at its WWDC conference.
If true, is this a sound strategy? Apple may very well use its keynote to unveil the next generation of the iPhone, just as it did last year for the iPhone 3G. Would the Pre’s launch the day before steal some of Apple’s thunder, or would it be too little, too late? And would Palm actually have the handset available for the masses at that time?
This is risky business, here: a completely new smartphone (Pre) possibly pitted against the smartphone king (iPhone) and the unknown quantity of its next generation model.
Why June 7? Some supposed internal Sprint documents name that date as one of two possible launch windows. Plus, more and more information bits keep coming: just this morning, screenshots of webOS’s SDK leaked.
