Della: Dell's answer to what women want?

Dell recently launched a new site geared towards women, called “Della.” Now, as a woman, I’d like to think that buying a computer is a pretty gender neutral thing. I don’t have to buy a pink laptop, and unlike at a department store, there are no ladies or men’s sections of the computer store. But, Dell still thinks a Web site for the ladies is an important thing to have.

Personally, I think it’s a little weak. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a Dell fan — Dell products often show up on Gadget Gal’s daily deals.

Della has four sections: products, featured artist, tech tips, and giving. The products page right now is really pushing the Mini 10 netbook. It can easily fit in your bag, and makes it easy to check the weather, movie times, or restaurant directions. These are all true, but I doubt these things would be as attractive to a male audience.

The “featured artist” page is a little confusing. The video on the page shows featured artist Robyn Moreno, who goes by the name Darling Robyn, at a thrift store in Austin shopping for clothes, shoes, and accessories. I suppose you could watch this video on your new netbook. But what’s the point of this page, really?

Della’s tech tips are also lacking. There are a few somewhat pertinent tips, but most of them aren’t actually the kind of tech tips you actually need. They offer you tips on how you can get healthier by using your Mini to track your exercise and food intake, as well as ways to eat better by finding recipes online and watching cooking videos.

I will give Dell this: there are no pink laptops on the page, but it’s not really worth the time. Besides, we’re busy women.

[Correction: Silly me, of course there's a pink laptop on the page, but at least it supports Susan G. Komen for the Cure.]

Why only women can like nice design?
I think these portables are nice. Would I buy one? If they have what I need under the hood, of course!

Would I be ashamed of it's design since I am a man even though I'm not gay? Of course not!... (Read the rest)
