Acer Inspire Gemstone smartphone? In your dreams.Despite a global economy in the tank, Acer is optimistic about the smartphone market, and has officially stated that it will launch its first Acer-branded smartphone in the first quarter of 2009, according to DigiTimes.

Acer…”Inspire”? “Perspire”? “Misfire”?

(I kid, I kid.)

According to the article, Acer’s smartphone development has been driven by its acquisition earlier this year of Taiwan smartphone maker E-Ten Information Systems. Originally, it was expected that Acer-branded handsets would hit the market by the end of this year — but the revised timetable is aiming for first-quarter 2009 initially in Western Europe and Russia, with other markets to follow later.

Sorry, Americans.

Adding to the confusion is company chairman JT Wang, who recently said that the launch may come as late as the second half of 2009, as Acer it is still negotiating with telecommunication service providers worldwide.

I guess someone didn’t get the memo.

Either way, what would you want to see in an Acer smartphone? Tell me in TalkBack.
