Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard cuts support for legacy Palm OS devices

Apple has discontinued support for legacy Palm OS devices in Mac OS X Snow Leopard’s iSync 3.1.0, according to a report.

Users of legacy Palm OS devices must obtain third party support for syncing Palm Desktop data with Mac OS X’s Sync Services, according to sources quoted by AppleInsider.

Palm still provides an old version of Palm Desktop 4.2.1D for Mac users, which enables Palm Centro, Treo, Zire, Tungsten, LifeDrive and Pilot models to synchronize with its Mac OS X Universal Binary desktop software, according to the report.

Palm never updated its Palm Desktop for Mac software to work with Apple’s iSync for Mac OS X, which enables devices from any manufacturer to sync data with a common shared store, according to the report.

The move shouldn’t cause too many waves, since Palm itself is slowly phasing out all devices that precede its Palm Pre smartphone, which is based on the company’s new webOS platform.

Third party software, such as Missing Sync from Mark/Space, enables Mac users to sync data with legacy Palm OS devices as well as the Pre, RIM’s BlackBerry family, Symbian and Windows Mobile-based devices.
