Intel Reader combines camera and text-to-speech functions
Intel is giving gadgets another go with the debut of their portable text-to-speech reader, the Intel Reader. But do not confuse this for an e-book reader alternative.
Besides the fact it has $1,500 price tag (everyone’s still complaining that they won’t pay $200 for an e-reader apparatus), it’s really targeted towards the visually-impaired. (Or, as Engadget notes, the lazy, which could also be true, so long as they’re rich.) Users can use a built-in digital camera in which the 5-megapixel camera can scan text and then the Intel device reads the text out loud at either 120 or 250 words per minute.
CNN Money reports that Intel hasn’t had the best luck with gadgetry in the past, but is diving into more niche tech products like healthcare gadgets for building new markets for themselves. This would definitely qualify as a niche gadget, and I can’t imagine most consumers buying this right now (or even considering it) during the economic climate right now. It’s not the sexiest design either. But it’s innovative and has a real purpose, so time will tell on this one.
