We hear that the state of Rhode Island has signed a five-year deal with demand response technology company EnerNOC to manage electricity demand across city, town and government-related buildings.

The idea is that government agencies will be encouraged to reduce their consumption during peak demand periods. Those that agree to do so will actually receive a fee, which could become a source of revenue to offset local tax increases. Each building or site that participates in the program will use EnerNOC’s PowerTrak energy management software application to keep tabs on energy consumption in real time. Here’s the complete press release.

In the past month, EnerNOC has also signed demand response pacts with the Tennessee Valley Authority, with Southern California Edison and Burlington Electric.
