CES gets the carbon treatment

Could the mammoth trade show that is the Consumer Electronics Show be in for the green treatment? I mean, after all, most of the vendors there will be preaching green goodness and yet the very act of traveling to a trade show is increasingly in for scrutiny.

Planet Metrics, a new-ish software company being launched this week with $2.3 million in Series A angel money and venture funding from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, has been tapped to measure and report on the amount of carbon and greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by next year’s show, which is being held from Jan. 8 - 11 in Las Vegas.

Something like 130,000 people went to the conference this year; it is billed at North America’s largest trade show. The Planet Metrics software for “rapid carbon modeling” will be used to record everything associated with putting the conference on, including transportation, electricity and the impact of hotel room stays. Think of this as business intelligence for your carbon bottom line as opposed to your inventory system or sales pipeline. Here’s the complete press release on the launch and the CES deal.

The company, which was actually founded in early 2007, will sell carbon modeling and virtualization sofware that it says can be deployed in as little as 30 days. The idea is to give businesses a better way to measure the effectiveness of their resources as well as their environmental impact by using existing information about supply chain, product design, logistics and “waste streams.”
