Fujitsu Siemens aims for zero-watt desktop milestone
It doesn’t seem at all strange to me that some of the next great green innovations at the desktop level will come from one of Europe’s premier technology companies, Fujitsu Siemens. After all, the European Union has been far more aggressive about adopting and embracing green technology than notoriously skeptical corporate America. You’ve gotta show them Yankees some green saved before they’ll really talk green. Not that I’m really blaming executives in the current economy.
Anyway, you may or may not know that Fujitsu Siemens already sells a series of green PCs under the Esprimo brand name. All of them use less than one watt of power in stand-by mode (which happens to be a requirement for all new PCs deployed in EU countries after Jan. 5, 2010). The company is planning to introduce a model at the upcoming CeBit conference, however, that will use ZERO watts in standby and YET still be considered available for administration. The systems are supposed to ship by the middle of this year.
