Gore backs effort to give enviro orgs and advocates Internet domain type
Well, maybe now Former Vice President Al Gore really CAN claim to have created some part of the Internet. In this case, a new domain designation .eco (”dot eco”) that can be the calling card of environmentally conscious individuals and organizations.
A company called Dot Eco LLC plans to apply to ICANN in late 2009 for the rights to offer .eco registrations.
Here’s Gore’s statement from the press release: “We fully support Dot Eco LLC in its efforts to secure the .eco top level domain through the ICANN application process and look forward to working with Dot Eco LLC to promote .eco. This is a truly exciting opportunity for the environmental movement and for the internet as a whole.”
I’ll bet there will be plenty of domain-squatting attempts associated with this domain extension. Remind me when to register, so I can protect my green opinion interests.
Here’s the full press statement.
