Tata Motors will begin selling the world’s cheapest mass-produced car next month. In its home country of India. The base price is about $2,000. Tata says it will have the Nano in Europe in 2011, in the U.S. by 2012.

They will have to gear up the Nano to meet tougher safety and emission standards in Europe and America. Still they hope to sell the car for $3,000 or less.

Nano is so-named for its miniscule size: ten feet long, five feet wide. in 2010 Tata hopes to make over 300,000 of the little coupes. It has a standard gasoline engine and promises over 50 miles per gallon because of its light weight.
