Radio Shack: Out with the old to make room for the new

You could call it an economic stimulus package in miniature, or just a really, really smart marketing gimmick: Radio Shack has expanded its electronics trade-in program to all 4,400 of its company-owned stores. And, if you bring in something that has some re-usable value, you will receive a same-day discount (the retailer doesn’t say how much) on eligible products.

The trade-in program applies to MP3 players, wireless telephones, gaming systems (and games), global positioning satellite receivers, digital cameras and digital camcorders. You could get extra if you return EVERYTHING (so if you’re the sort who squirrels away all the adapters, manuals and chargers that come with gadgets, you could get a little extra).

Radio Shack also runs an online trade-in program that includes all the things that I’ve already listed PLUS notebook computers, car audio equipment, high-definition televisions and monitors.

And now for the fine print:

  • The piece of electronics you’re trying to trade in must still have a pulse in order for it to be appraised and for you to receive some sort of discount off what you’d like to buy.
  • You have to be the owner, so no fair stealing your significant other’s gaming console and trying to pawn it off on Radio Shack just because it takes away from couples’ time.
  • Just like at the airport security line, you will need to show a photo ID of some sort (driver’s license, passport, state ID card or military ID) in order to qualify for your gift card.

More information on the Radio Shack program here.
