Seagate slashes power used by its Barracuda hard drives
Seagate Technology has upped the ante for green client technology with a 3.5-inch, 5900-RPM desktop hard drive that comes in capacities of 2 Tbyes, 1.5 Tbytes or 1 Tbyte but that use roughly 50 percent less electricity than competitive products. They can be used for personal attached storage applications working over USB/FireWire/eSATA or for lower-powered PCs.
The Seagate Barracuda LP line—LP stands for Low Power—are also designed to be quieter and operate at lower temperatures than alternatives, according to the company. The company figures that about 70 percent of the drives can be recycled at the end of their life.
