OK, I admit that I just HAD to use that headline because I am a closet hockey fan. But Advanced Micro Devices does indeed have some news this week about the power efficiency of its quad-core Opteron microprocessor product line.

The company’s latest quad-core edition is the 40W ACP AMD Opteron EE, which the company says uses 13 percent less power at the platform level than its previous generation. The chip is intended for use in very dense data center situations, such as those that server up Web applications. Here’s the complete press release about the launch.

Or, for those more technical among you, this presentation contains the full specs about the latest processors as well as its performance per watt metrics and other stats that you’d need to know if you were upgrading some of your existing servers or provisioning new ones.
