Noticed that Harry pointed to a new alternative energy list posted yesterday by the NRDC. Well, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has just updated its quarterly reckoning of the top businesses, government agencies, universities, communities and so on that have made a substantial commitment to using alternative energy sources.

Intel still leads the main Top 50 list, with more than 1,301,200,000 kilowatt hours consumed in wind energy annually, which works out to be 46 percent of its annual energy usage. Dell is No. 4 on the list, with 553,708,000 kilowatt hours in biogas, biomass, small-hydro, solar and wind. That works out to be 158 percent (Dell buys lots of offsets), so that means Dell shows up on the list of companies that have made a 100 percent commitment to alternative energy. Cisco Systems is No. 9 on the Top 50 list, with 400,996,000 kilowatt hours, or 46 percent of its annual usage.

Other familiar names, such as Advanced Micro Devices, Apple Computer, Hewlett-Packard, IBM and Oracle show up on the Fortune 500 ranking.

The EPA site also provides a green power locator with information about available sources of alternative energy in different parts of the country.
