Swine flu: gaia v. capitalism?

Some blogs are looking at the feverish interest in swine flu and seeing a moral and environmental lesson. For what it’s worth (FWIW), Mexican officials say they’ve found no evidence of the current deadly swine flu strain among…well, swine. Meanwhile the flu’s alleged death toll rises in Mexico, but nobody has died in any of the other affected populations. That make sense to you?

Perhaps what’s needed is a little more science, a little less journalism. And, of course, there are the politics of pandemic panic, import and travel bans, etc .

Another FWIW: the U.N. is sending Food and Agriculture investigators to Mexico. Their quest is any link between actual swine and the flu thagt humans are blaming on them. And U.S. meat-packers are getting clobbered in the stock market. Like salmonella-slaughtered tomato sellers some weeks back. Don’t you just love food fears? Isn’t there some enterprising enterprise that can start coming up with a handy, nano-sized personal food scanner?
