China is working on crops that will resist some of the more likely effects of global warming. No, not plants that produce their own water. But hardier than current plants. Chinese scientists are working on laser-treating grain seeds to make them more drought and unltraviolet radiation-resistant. you need to register for a free acount to get access to this nature.com content.

Here’s an excerpt. “Certain types of laser light have been shown to accelerate growth, improve seed germination and enhance the levels of useful compounds in plants. Now, scientists in China have found that laser treatment can even protect plants against harmful environmental stresses.”
