Green computer battery maker Boston-Power must be doing all right for itself. The company is build a 455,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Auburn, Mass., to produce its lithium-ion battery technology, which is offered as replacement options for notebooks for Hewlett-Packard. The site is expected to create 600 new jobs.

Boston-Power’s Sonata batteries are designed to last longer than conventional batteries and they have a longer life: that is, their performance takes longer to degrade than current notebook computer batteries. The company also is working on technology for Plug-in Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicles, which is calls Swing. There aren’t many details on Swing available yet, but this is a pretty detailed story with some good background.

Boston-Power is seeking $100 million in federal funds associated with the U.S. Department of Energy’s battery and cell manufacturing grant program to help it build the facility. The development is notable because, apparently, most of lithium-ion batteries used today are currently manufactured in Asia.
