Surprise! It’s a European car brand. What Car? magazine chose the little Volvo diesel S40 as its greenest car of the year. Also getting category awards were Vauxhall’s electric Amphera and the American-made Tesla.

Not only does the S40 get Prius-type gas efficiency, it has no expensive battery using precious metals and it is safe. The S40 can be purchased in the U.S. for less than $38,000 plus tax. Volvo is being sold by Ford Motor and has cut more than $3000 from its S40 list price.
