America's #1 global warmer
And it’s not Al Gore. Far longer and far more informatively, Dr. James Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies, has been warning, pleading, descrying and describing the progress and effects of global warming. And now he’s been given a lengthy profile in the New Yorker.
Thirty-two years ago Hansen created the world’s first climate model. He’s been watching the earth’s climate since then. Hansen says right now CO2 is being pumped into the atmosphere about ten thousand times faster than natural processes can remove it or convert it to other compounds.

Hansen has called for shutting down all coal-burning plants in the next two decades. Tomorrow he will join anti-coal activists at a protest in West Virgnia. This protest is particualrly aimed at MTR, mountain top removal to get at the coal beneath it. Civil disobedience and arrests expected tomorrow–doesn’t sound like Al Gore’s kinda thing.
