A couple of years ago, when the managed services mantra was particularly sexy, pretty much every printing or imaging peripherals vendor you can name from memory spun out some sort of managed service designed to manage the print lifecycle. Now, of course, the buzz du jour is “green office,” and assessments have pretty much become standard fare for any technology provider that hopes to get an appointment in this brutal tech sales climate.

The latest company to spin up its “holistic approach to document management” is Ricoh Americas, which has recently rolled out the Total Green Office Solution. The service covers pretty much what you would think: a workflow analysis of how your company uses its printer fleet, an examination of how much paper you’re wasting, and an evaluation of whether or not your business is a candidate for hardware consolidation.

Don’t get me wrong, Ricoh NEEDS to do this, so I’m not belittling the existence of this service. It’s necessary, even if Ricoh and pretty much every printer/imaging vendor you could name are just recasting the paperless office mantra we’ve all been ignoring for decades. At least now, there is more meat behind the marketing than simply all the great efficiency gains.
