Week-end round-up of e-cycling resources (consumer-tech only)
I’ve written about quite a few of the individual technology recovery and recycling options that individuals and businesses can use when they’re trying to clear out old gear. This article from Environmental Leader provides a wrap-up summary of what’s new. I won’t rehash what’s said, because this is a good overview. The main things that you need to figure out when evaluating these programs is:
- Confirm that the operation uses ethical disposal methods. There should be a disclosure on their Web site, at the very least, that states where components will wind up and how private data is purged.
- Figure out what payment, if any, you want or deserve for your old technology. Some organizations will reimburse you in the form of a gift card, others will give you cash outright, and still others will simply pay for the cost of shipping your product (or products) to their facility.
