Remodelled house generates more energy than it uses
There’s an Aspen, Colordao, home with 16-inch thick walls. The house uses plenty of passive solar energy as well photovoltaic cells. It is a “smart house” with constant monitoring of energy use, light, solar input. The owner plans to put real-time data from the sensors onto the web. None of this is cheap. Total value of the renovation is into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Here’s a video of the house.
The home is owned by Amory Lovin, head of Rocky Mountain Institute. That non-profit is about energy efficient design so Lovin is the walking the walk in his own life. The Wall Street Journal’s website has a floorplan of the Lovin house.
WHAT CAN I DO?
A couple of low-cost energy saving moves possible where you live: plug air leaks and use energy-efficient lighting wherever possible. And hope that LEDs are produced for every lighting need ASAP
