Here’s a look at the issues involve dintrying to find a useful metric to measure energy consumption by the next generation of plug-in cars. I’ve blogged about the recent rival claims by GM and Nissan for their rival electrics, due out in the next two years. GM is also condiering selling or licensing some of Volt’s tech to other firms.
FISKER KARMA
Fisker Karma made its public debut run this weekend in Monterey. The Fiskerites reckon as how their little buggy might get an MPG rating around 140 MPG. Modest compared to claims from GM and Nissan.
The Fisker electric plug-in hybrid will sell in the luxury class. Cost $87.5 K. Required reservation deposit: $5. Federal rebate: $7.5K. Not sure if there’s a discount when you order a dozen. Here’s the Fisker website. The car’s due out next spring.

At best, about 52 MPG (cost basis) for Volt
Using cost of electricity / cost of gasoline, and GM's numbers, the Volt at best will cost $2.00 for the first 40 miles, while a Corolla would cost about $3.00 for those same miles. Using raw energy ... (Read the rest)
