Now the Royal Society of the U.K. is looking at various geo-engineering schemes suggested for combatting global warming or its effects. As time passes and nothing significant is done in the political realm, global warming promises to become an exercise in triage. Thus macro-scale schemes to alter the atmosphere or temperature trends will become more and more attractive to corporations and governments alike.
The Royal Society says some plans could have disastrous side-effects and that international agreements should be required. Right now there are no treaties that apply to most global warming geo-engineering ideas. Further, the Royal Society report concludes there is no geo-engineering quick cure for global warming. You can find the Royal Society report here.
The American National Academy of Sciences will issue its own report on global warming later this year and that will include an examiniation of geo-engineering as well.
