Using green IT to meet corporate sustainability goals. Deloitte offers tips in Webinar.
Wondering how to get your chief executive to buy more into technology’s role in helping reduce energy consumption or in managing environmental initiatives?
Deloitte Consulting recently hosted a seminar called “Competing in the Low-Carbon Economy: The Essential Dialogue Between the CIO and the C-Suite. Its goal was to help CIOs and IT directors understand why an integrated approach to managing corporate sustainability issues is crucial and why technology should be positioned at the core of this approach. I just went through the accompanying slides and wanted to point out two major sets of tips that you’ll hear more about.
First, the Deloitte speakers discuss the sorts of technologies that will absolutely play a role in the sustainability and green IT discussion. They include (in order of importance):
- Videoconferencing
- Online collaboration technology
- Enhanced/alternative cooling technology
- Energy management software for servers and PCs
- Server virtualization
- Mobile devices
- Use of direct current rather than alternating current
They also suggest the information “care-abouts” for other members of the executive suite, and why technology will play a huge role in collecting, analyzing and serving up this information. Here are several of the things that your peers have to worry about:
Operations Foreman = Historical quality information
CFO = Financial impact of any corporate responsibility initiatives
CIO = (Yes, you or your boss) Energy consumption from IT operations
Plant Manager = Status reports on sustainability performance
CEO = Reporting into the board
Community Relations = Answering to shareholders
Facilities Engineer = Providing proactive preventive maintenance
Enterprise Risk Manager = Analyzing incidents
See what I mean? Plenty of people to please. Deloitte suggests that one framework will do the job more efficiently, instead of relying on poorly coordinated, siloed reports.
