The latest U.N. report on global warming assumes that political leadership actually begins to lower emissions from major polluters like the U.S.and China. That may be unwarranted. But the report goes on to say: the earth will be as much as 7 degrees (Fahrenheit) hotter by the end of this century. If this be true, your grandkids are NOT going to be thanking us for that little hand-me-down. But it should lead to a land rush by vintners looking for prime land on the Alaskan Riviera.
Even if developing countries like China begin to cut emissions–not a wise assumption–the globe faces a three degree temperature rise according to the U.N. report. Right now there is not much momentum in slowing the emission growth in most countries outside the E.U.
The U.N. report concludes that planetary warming is accelerating. Severe regional droughts, acidic ocean water and rapid glacial melt are all cited as examples of the global warming effects. Acidic ocean water is already upwelling along the California coast. That water threatens the survival of shellfish, crustaceans and coral reefs. The latter have been dying off in numerous tropical locales. The report also predicts widening desertification due to extended droughts.
Rising sea levels threatens areas where up to 25% of all human now live.
