The power of choice: APC ALSO is shipping a timer-controlled surge protector
The product marketing teams over at APC by Schneider Electric were kind enough to point out to me yesterday that THEY, too, have introduced surge protector this year that is endowed with power-saving powers and a timer to switch it off after a certain period of use. (I wrote about a Belkin product earlier this week.)
The APC Power-Saving Surge Protector with LCD Timer comes in two different models, the P4GC and the P6GC. One has four timer-controlled outlets, the other has five timer-controller outlets and one always-on switch. The main difference between the Belkin device and the APC gadget is that the Belkin strip has more outlets than either APC model, but you can actually control the timer settings on the APC models and you can’t on the Belkin one either to turn it on or off.
There are five scheduled settings that you can choose with the APC strips. So, for example, you could set your mobile phone to charge into the evening hours, but ask the protector to switch off sometime during the night to save energy. APC figures the annual standby power savings at $20 with the P4GC and $60 with the P6GC.
The P4GC and P6GC carry retail prices of $16.99 and $19.99, respectively. Both carry APC’s lifetime Equipment Protection Policy, which will cover connected equipment up to $50,000.
