Sun revs its data center efficiency message
Sun Microsystems, which was the first major server company to qualify for utility company rebates for the energy efficiency of its technology, has upped the data center server ante with two new models in its CMT SPARC Enterprise server line.
The two new systems, the T5140 and the T5240, are the first servers to use the new UltraSPARC T2 Plus processor. The systems, which were designed to fit into the same chassis as previous generations, are designed to offer from 16 to 32 times the compute density of rival x86 offerings, according to Sun’s marketing materials. Another way to some up Sun’s key market message for this two new boxes: The company believes they offer 2.5 times performance per watt in roughly have the space. I spoke with a couple of Sun server engineers about a month ago about how design contributes to server energy efficiency. In addition to the processor technology, they say they’ve been able to improve the airflow in their servers by rethinking how the components are placed and cutting back on the cabling inside. Special composite materials are also helpful at cutting down on fan vibrations and focusing cooling power.
Pricing for the T5140 model starts at roughly $15,000, while the T5240 starts at close to $18,000.
