How long until Windows 7 market share beats Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard?
OK, time for a bit of fun. Windows 7 hits the General Availability make on October 22nd. How long until Windows 7 market share beats Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard?
Here’s the data as it stood for September 09 as per Net Applications:
- Windows 7: 1.52%
- Mac OS X 10.5 3.03%
- Mac OS X 10.4 0.96%
- Mac OS X 10.6 0.77%
- Mac OS X 10.4/10.5 combined 4.76%
How long until Windows 7 market share beats Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard/Snow Leopard?
Note: Windows 7 has already beaten Linux’s market share of 0.96%.
Note: I’m pretty sure that Net Applications will be tracking market share hourly following launch.
Want to make a more precise guess? Pop it in the TalkBack!
[UPDATE: Via Twitter, PC Pro's Jon Honeyball suggested that a good metric would be to see how long it takes Windows 7 to grab the same percentage of the Windows install base that Snow Leopard has captured of the entire Mac OS X intall base - Interesting!]

Pop quiz - Which would you choose?
Watching all those Microsoft “Laptop Hunter” ads got me thinking - if I offered you $2,000 to spend on either a Windows based or Mac OSX based notebook (don’t get all excited, it’s a hypothetical question!), which would you choose?
Why?

How will you be upgrading to Windows 7?
In a poll I placed in a post yesterday 33% of the 2,048 respondents said that they would be upgrading to Windows 7 “As soon as it is released!” Today I’m curious to know how the switch will be made.
I have to admit to being surprised by the results. I didn’t expect that so many people to be ready to jump to a new OS as quickly as that, especially since we’ve only seen one official beta from Redmond. Maybe the surveys are right and people are keen for a new OS. It’s possible that between the large number of people still on XP, and latent dissatisfaction among current Vista users, perhaps there is a critical mass of users waiting for the new OS to appear. Perhaps XP is showing its age a lot more than some of the users that are still using it are willing to admit.
Maybe I should run the same poll the day after Windows 7 has been released to see how many people have actually upgraded!

Will the economic downturn have a negative effect on open source?
OK, time for a question. Let’s take it as given that the economy is choppy. Translating this to Main St, unemployment is at a 5 year high, prices are up and credit is harder to find. Will this have a negative effect on the “free” economy that many open source projects rely on?
Here’s Andrew Keen’s take on how these rough times might affect Web 2.0 projects that rely on free workers:
So much for the good news. Hundreds of thousands, and perhaps millions, of newly redundant Americans will have nothing to do all day except contribute to wikis or become citizen journalists or “work” on their Facebook or MySpace pages. In an America where one in 10 adults are out of work, will Wired editor-in-chief Chris Anderson’s free economic model revolutionize the nature of work? Is $0.00 really the future of labor in an age of mass unemployment?
Here Keen is talking about Web 2.0. But what about software? Will tougher times mean that people who currently donate their skills as say coders expect some kind of return?
Also, what effect might this have on the wider market? Apple’s App Store is crammed with free apps. Will this change as the economy continues to bite?
My take: Even in tough times it’s good for the soul to give something back, so overall, while people might start to value their time more I don’t think that there will be a mass exodus away from open source projects. And remember, if people in developer countries who are feeling the pinch do decide they want a return on their time investment, this economy is undermined by developing nations who would do the same job for less.

Have you cut down on your tech spending?
The question on all tech pundit’s lips (not to mention those of tech CEOs and tech investors) is this - have people cut back on tech spending. Well, have you?
Bonus question (the results of which will be of particular interest to those involved in the consumer tech industry) - are you planning to buy fewer tech-related gifts during the holidays?
Shoot!

What was the cause of the last PC failure you came across?
Quick poll inspired by a Hardware 2.0 (JaneB) reader who wanted to know what is the most common kind of PC failure.
The most common failures I come across are”
- Dead PSUs (in new PCs)
- Dead motherboards (in PCs under a year old)
- Dead hard drives (in PCs older than about 4 years)
When it comes to my own PCs I try to minimize the chances of seeing a dead PSU by buying quality units, and reduce on the chances of being hit by a dead drive by moving them from critical service and into a non-critical role after about three years.
There’s no way to protect against failures since entropy rules and if a component isn’t dead, it’s on the path to death. All you can do is minimize the disruption that the component failure causes.

Can you see yourself running Windows Vista in 2014?
Time for a quick poll …
Can you see yourself running Windows Vista in 2014? Or will you have moved on to Windows 7 (or whatever follows), Linux, Mac … ?
Oddly enough, after I asked the same question about Windows XP, this poll has become the most requested poll on this blog.
