Windows 7 - The missing bits
Windows 7 certainly seems set to become the best incarnation of Windows yet. But despite all the updates and tweaks that I’ve seen in Windows 7, I still feel that this OS is missing features that I think should be part of a modern OS.
Here are a few of these features. I’ve also listed my current favorite third party tool that adds this support.
- File compression formats
Support for more file compression formats - Files such as .RAR and .7Z.
Third party software I use: 7-Zip - PDF support
Built-in PDF reader - I’ve got an .XPS reader that I never use, not having .PDF support seems silly.
Third party software I use: Foxit PDF Reader - Secure delete
In this era of ID theft and so on, a secure delete app seems like a sensible precaution.
Third party software I use: Eraser - Password manager
Again, passwords are a fact of life, and keeping track of them is becoming increasingly difficult. A simple password manager would encourage users to adopt good habits.
Third party software I use: PasswordSafe - Blu-ray support
Since the HD war was won by Blu-ray I can’t understand why Windows 7 doesn’t support it.
Third party software I use: PowerDVD - Proper .ISO support
Windows 7 supports the burning of .ISO images, but there’s no sign of the ability to mount them. Why not?
Third party software I use: Virtual CloneDrive
That’s my list - what do you think is missing from Windows?
