We see four new desktop processors unveiled by AMD at the COMPUTEX trade show.

Athlon II dieWhile some of use are enjoying life with three, four or more cores on out CPUs, for most, dual core is the best buy for most users, packing the best punch for the dollar.

The two new dual core pieces are as follows:

  • Phenom X2 550 Black Edition | 3.1GHz | AM3 socket | 1MB L2/6MB L3 | 80W TDP
  • Athlon II X2 250 | 3.0GHz | AM3 socket | 2MB L2 | 65W TDP

Note: “Black Edition” means that the multiplier is unlocked, allowing for better overclocking.

For those wanting an extra core, there’s a new triple core piece:

  • Phenom II X3 705e | 2.5GHz | AM3 socket | 1.5MB L2/6MB L3 | 65W TDP

This piece is essentially an energy-efficient variant of the 2.6GHz Phenom II X3 710 that has a TDP of 95W.

Then there’s a new quad core part, which is also energy efficient:

  • Phenom II X4 905e | 2.5GHz | AM3 socket | 2MB L2/6MB L3 | 65W TDP

This is an energy-efficient variant of the 2.6GHz Phenom II X4 910, which also has a TDP of 95W.

Given the lower TDP of the triple and quad parts, these should help reduce energy bill, or for those looking for more power, offer more scope for overclocking.

It was about # of cores, power consumption, perf and price. The point being that AMD will never win if it picks just one, but is having considerable success by offering a part with an extra core, less... (Read the rest)
