Highlights from WWDC 2009 keynote
What will Apple unveil at today’s WWDC keynote speech? Pundits are expecting iPhone OS 3.0 and the next-gen iPhone, but these are little more than guesses.
OK, the event has kicked off!
- 12:01 PT: Available June 17th.
- 11:59 PT: Price: $199 for 16GB model, $299 for 32GB model. 8GB iPhone 3G (not 3GS) down to $99. New iPhone looks like the 3G model. Most eco-friendly iPhone - arsenic, mercury and BRF free.
- 11:57 PT: iPhone 3GS supports data encryption. Also, improved battery life: 9 hours surfing, 10 hours video, 30 hours audio, 12 hours 2G talk-time, 5 hours 3G talk-time.
- 11:55 PT: Also, new compass app (info on this was leaked last week).
- 11:52 PT: Edit videos on the iPhone 3GS. Upload to YouTube, MobileMe or send via MMS/email.
- 11:48 PT: Introducing the iphone 3GS. The “S” stands for speed! Supports OpenGL|ES 2.0. 7.2Mbps HSPDA support. 3.2 megapixel auto focus camera with video capability.
- 11:45 PT: iPhone platform currently makes up of 65% of all mobile web usage.
- 11:42 PT: 3.0 Software available June 17th and is free for all iPhone owners and $9.95 for iPod touch owners (booo!!!!).
- 11:23 PT: TomTom to bring turn-by-turn navigation to iPhone. national and international maps available this summer.
- 11:21 PT: 50 major magazines and 1 million more books to come to the App Store.
- 11:13 PT: Push notifications - can include pop-up alerts, sounds, and App icon badges. Pop-up alerts look like they could get real old, real fast.
- 11:09 PT: 1,000 new APIs in iPhone OS 3.0, Features such as in-app purchasing (vacuum hose into your bank account!), accessories can hook up with device via Bluetooth or dock.
- 11:07 PT: Find My iPhone service for MobileMe customers - see where your iPhone is on Google Maps. Send your phone a message to make it ring (even if on silent). Also, send a remote wipe command in case of loss.
- 11:05 PT: 30 new languages now supported by iPhone OS 3.0.
- 11:03 PT: Safari on iPhone/iPod touch now 3x faster. HTML 5.0 support. Auto-fill support for passwords, addresses etc …
- 11:01 PT - Internet teathering support for Mac and PC via USB or Bluetooth using iPhone. Not available on AT&T yet …
- 10:59 PT: Rent and buy movies from iTunes from the iPhone.
- 10:59 PT: Spotlight search capability.
- 10:58 PT: AT&T won’t have MMS support for the iPhone until late summer.
- 10:55 PT: iPhone OS 3.0 - 100 new features. OK, let’s kick off with cut, copy and paste (at last!!!). Worlks across all apps. Shake to undo. Landscape support for many apps, MMS (Wow! Finally?!???!!) …
- 10:49 PT: History lesson - 1 million SDK downloads. 50K apps in store. 40 million iPhones/iPod touch sold already. 1 billion apps downloaded.
- 10:48 PT: Snow Leopard will ship September and the upgrade for Leopard users will cost ONLY $29! Upgrades usually cost $129. Family pack will be $129
- 10:40 PT: Also added is Exchange support integrated with Mail, iCal, and Address Book. Features auto-discovery. Requires Exchange Server 2007.
- 10:37 PT: Snow Leopard - Built-in multi-core support, new, faster threading system, OpenCL to leverage powerful GPUs. 10:27 PT: QuickTime X - New interface.
- 10:23 PT: Safari 4 for Leopard, Tiger, and Windows ships today. Faster than IE8 (what browser isn’t). Plugin sandboxing prevents a crashed plugin from downing the browser.
- 10:20 PT: Onto Snow Leopard … it’s all about refinement … 45% faster install, 6GB knocked off installed footprint compared to Leopard … faster preview … 10:19 PT: Takking a pop shot at Vista and Windows 7: “Even more complexity is present in Windows 7. The same old tech as Vista. Just another version of Vista.”
- 10:17 PT: All notebooks now EPEAT GOLD, Energy Star 5.0 compliant. “World’s greenest lineup of notebooks”
- 10:16 PT: MacBook Air gets a revamp and price cut of $700.
- 10:13 PT: New 13″ MacBook Pro, starting at $1,199.
- 10:12 PT: 17″ MacBook Pro gets a revamp (2.8GHz processor, 500GB HD) and a price drop of $300 from today.
- 10:11 PT: Prices: Top end - $2,299 | Midrange - $1,999 | Budget - $1,699.
- 10:10 PT: Fastest Apple notebook yet - 3.06GHz Dual Core CPU, up to 8GB of RAM, hard drive either 500GB 7200RPM HD or 256GB SSD.
- 10:07 PT: New 15″ MacBook Pro. Promises 7 hour battery life. Battery can withstand 1,000 recharges - customers will get 5 years of use before battery start to degrade.
- The Keynote will begin at 10:00 am Pacific Time and will be presented by Phil Schiller, Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing for Apple, Inc.
