Windows Update kills PowerPoint feature

I’m getting reports that a recent Windows Update has killed a feature in PowerPoint.

The update in question is KB973815/MS09-037 which relates to a critical vulnerability in the Microsoft Active Template Library. This update was released last Patch Tuesday (Aug 11th). This update updates a file called Mswebdvd.dll which is used to create script based DVD applications.

OK, so what’s the problem? Well, basically it’s that the new update kills off the ability to embed Mswebdvd.dll into PowerPoint, causing problems. If you already have the control embedded, the control won’t work and it can cause PowerPoint to crash.

If you rely on accessing DVD content from your PowerPoint presentations, be careful with this update.
