OpenOfficeMouse - Put an end to button envy!

WarMouse has announced that it will start selling a mouse specifically designed for the OpenOffice suite early next year. And if you existing mouse gives you a case of button envy, then this is the mouse for you.

The mouse, called OOMouse, features eighteen (count em, eighteen!) buttons!

But that’s not all. Take a look at these raft of features:

  • 18 programmable mouse buttons with double-click functionality
  • Three different button modes: Key, Keypress, and Macro
  • Analog Xbox 360-style joystick with optional 4, 8, and 16-key command modes
  • Clickable scroll wheel
  • 512k of flash memory
  • 63 on-mouse application profiles with hardware, software, and autoswitching capability
  • 1024-character macro support.
  • Open source support software for creating, managing, and customizing application profiles
  • Import and export of custom profiles in XML format
  • Optional audio notification of profile switching with customizable wave files
  • PDF export of profile button assignments
  • Adjustable resolution from 400 to 1,600 CPI
  • 20 default profiles for popular games and applications, including OpenOffice.org 3.1, Adobe Photoshop, the Gnu Image Manipulation Program, World of Warcraft, and the Call of Duty series.

I like everything about the OOMouse … well, everything except the overall design. OK, I’ve not had any hands-on time with it yet, but the front end of that thing seems awfully crowded with buttons. Years ago I was a big fan of Microsoft’s Strategic Commander gaming controller (Anyone remember that thing? Big thing you layed your whole hand on …) but that was a much bigger affair, and the buttons were bigger, numbered, better spaced out and glowed. With the OOMouse, well, I’m not sure how usable it will be. It might be great, but it could very well be a major pain.

Note: This mouse isn’t made by OpenOffice. It is instead made by WarMouse, and the OpenOffice connection is branding.

For more information about the OOMouse, visit http://www.oomouse.com. The OOMouse supports Windows, Linux, and Macintosh operating systems and will retail for $74.99.
