Amazon.com knocks $500 off $7k Mitsubishi LaserVue HDTV. Will anyone buy it now?
After delaying the release for some time, Mitsubishi finally rolled out its laser-based HDTV last fall, though the timing for sets using the new technology and carrying those first-generation price tags wasn’t exactly optimal. In the era of easy credit, maybe some reckless spenders would score a home equity loan and drop $7,000 for a 65-inch TV that’s using lasers and offering performance that could compete with top plasmas and LCDs. Clearly, those days are long, long gone.
So it should come as no surprise that Amazon has cut the price on the L65A90, down to a more “affordable” $6,499. OneCall has the same price for the set. Meanwhile, our sister site CNET lists the LaserVue as discontinued, which could explain why the price has started dropping. Given the state of the economy, there may not be a second-generation laser TV released commercially. That means those five sets left in stock at Amazon could join the pantheon of technologies that will be relegated to the dustbin of history&151;that is, unless Mitsubishi comes out and confirms future products using the technology and explains why CNET is labeling the LaserVue as discontinued.
