GE postpones next month's launch of its new HDTVs
Last we heard, GE was readying a new line of HDTV under the General Displays & Technologies moniker with partner Tatung, and even setting its sites on premium brands like Sony and Samsung instead of cheaper models. Those first sets were due next month, but according to the New York Times, the introduction has been pushed back an additional three months—or possibly more.
The delay is being blamed on marketing issues, rather than production issues. The Times speculates that the timing wasn’t exactly ideal to launch a brand that is emphasizing premium quality since the economy is forcing the remaining buyers out there to seek out the lowest prices on sets. GDT has its work cut out for it just trying to crack an already shrinking lineup of HDTV makers riding out the recession, and delay or not, it’s really going to have to blow some minds with the design and performance of its sets to have the impact on the market it’s looking for.
