Microsoft have joined the fight against starvation, by reducing the price of the most expensive version of Vista dramatically to students, part of the (PRODUCT)RED campaign.

I’ve written about the Ultimate Steal before; a way for students to get their hands on a legal, genuine copy of Office Ultimate 2007 and Windows Vista Ultimate for really quite cheap prices. This way, a proportion of the sale goes directly to the people who help save Africa from AIDS, drought, hunger and just general badness really. So far, the Global Fund has raised around $115 million which can go towards saving hundreds of thousands of people. As before, this offer is only available to students with a valid university email address.

So what do you get for your slightly more expensive upgrade?:

  • a few free, new wallpapers - some “Africa inspired” and some with the (PRODUCT) RED logo on;
  • a new DreamScene for moving wallpapers, of a leaf falling to the ground of the same (PRODUCT) RED logo on;
  • an Empoiro Armani clock gadgets for the Sidebar;
  • a new INSPI(RED) screen-saver, similar to the DreamScene;
  • and “more”, which is basically nothing else.

There’s much more available too; Microsoft working with Dell came up with some specialist machines a year or so ago, which gives off some new designs and features.

Give a man a fish, he’ll eat for a day. Buy a copy of Windows (Vista Ultimate)RED and corporate marketing folks can feed Africa for a few more years.
