Southern California-based discount variety chain 99¢ Only Stores says they will sell nine Apple iPhones for 99 cents this coming Thursday.

The occasion is the 25th anniversary of the chain’s original location, located in Westchester, CA at 6854 La Tijera Boulevard.

Opportunties will be given to the first nine customers.

In addition to the circus-like atmosphere that is sure to ensue, the real interesting issue is given iPhone’s retail exclusivity in Apple and AT&T Wireless stores- how the heck this deal was done.

Hoops had to be jumped through, chits called in, etc.

Interesting to speculate whether or not this promotion will cause other retailers to want to hop on the iPhone bandwagon. Will there be enough of a clamor to cause Apple and AT&T to strategically yield on their five-year retail exclusivity window if enough special-event-related dough is waved in their face?

I suspect exceptions will be made, and will increase over time.
