He was an engineer, a communicator, the ultimate space-faring IT manager.

And he knew a few things about workarounds, right?

StarTrek communicators would have used VoIP.

Those same communicators would have been VoIP-enabled for ship to surface communications- and planets colonized by the Federation would have had VoIP-enabled WiMax.

Which they will.

Fare thee well, Jimmy Doohan/Scotty. You nurtured generations of techies. Including me.

My point was the communicators (and indeed the whole communications infrastructure of the Enterprise) seemed perilously prone to interference from hostile forces.
