Gizmo vs. Skype: Robertson sees how they run
Entrepreneur Michael Robertson, whose SIPPhone, Inc VoIP open standards initiative has released what some people call the "Skype-killer" Gizmo Project softphone, has been running both Gizmo Project and Skype’s softphone on his PC.
Last night, he emailed me with some results and overview.
"I just checked memory usage on an XP box running fresh install of Gizmo and Skype. Gizmo used 7.4MBs and Skype used 24.5MBs," Robertson noted to me in his email. "I was surprised at the difference, but I don’t know if my PC is representative or not, but I checked it out because users have told us they’ve seen big differences."
Mike indicated the results surprised him.
"I would have thought Gizmo Project would be more because of its features, but I think Skype’s P2P nature adds lots of overhead."
He did, however, point out one attribute in which Skype has a lead on the Gizmo Project at this time.
"Of course Skype has us beat in some ways too like having multiple languages," Mike wrote. "We only have English. But competition is always a good thing!"
Yes, it is. And from what would best be generic indicators for now, don’t bet against more innovations from the Gizmo Project.
