PC gaming was a $10.7 bln industry during the year of 2007, with retail sales accounting for just 30% of total revenues. According to PC Gaming Alliance, growth was largely driven by online revenues from Asia, the world’s largest market, which is approaching half of total worldwide sales. Online PC gaming revenue led the way in 2007 with $4.8 bln, nearly double the worldwide retail sales numbers for PC games. Digital distribution sales approached $2 bln, while advertising revenues from websites, portals, and in-game ads accounted for $800 mln.

29% of Internet users have purchased goods from spam emails, according to Marshal. The most commonly purchased items include sexual enhancement pills, software, adult material and luxury items such as watches, jewellery and clothing. Botnets are networks comprised of thousands of infected personal computers, controlled remotely by criminals. They have enabled spammers to push down their costs through economies of scale and eliminated the need for spammers to host their own spam servers as they simply take control of other people’s computers instead. Recent FBI prosecutions of bot-herders and investigations of message-boards used by spammers, suggests the going rate for spammers to send a mln spam messages is as little as $5-10.

28 mln cell phones were sold in the United States in Q2 2008, a decline of 13% from Q2 2007. The total value of the market was down only 2% from Q2 2007, at $2.4 bln, according to NPD. Motorola’s phones were the most popular, but its share of the units sold dropped to 21%, from 32% in 2007.

Consumer Driven Health Plans, or CDHPs, increased by 43% from 2007, and now comprise nearly 13% of all plans offered by employers. The%age of employees enrolled in these plans nearly doubled, from six% in 2007 to 11.2% 2008. While preferred provider organizations (PPOs) continue to dominate the market, representing 54% of plans offered by employers and nearly two-thirds (62.7%) of employees enrolled, health maintenance organization (HMO) participation continues to slip, and now represents just 21.3% of plans offered, with only 13.3% of employees enrolled, United Benefits Advisors reported.

Q2 2008 North American flat panel TV sales jumped 26% when compared to the Q1 2008 and 28% when compared to Q1 2007, according to DisplaySearch. 9.3 mln units were shipped in Q2 2008. LCD and Plasma TV technologies both posted strong sequential quarterly gains, rising 30% and 35%, respectively. The top selling brand was Samsung with total TV shipment share surging to a record 19.1% of all TV unit shipments in North America during the quarter.
