Edition number 28 in this Digital Markets Blog presidential campaign 2008 series on what I am calling “User Generated Politics”

MySpace is a hotly contested virtual battleground in “User Generated Politics” presidential campaign 2008.

Barack Obama is en route to a landslide victory over Hillary Clinton in the MySpace friends contest: Obama 55,674 friends versus Clinton 26,702 friends.

Maya, pictured, is one of the happy 55,674 MySpace friends in the Obama camp.

Why does Obama have more than twice the MySpace friends than Clinton? Are Obama’s positions on the issues favored more than Clinton’s positions among MySpacers, or is he a much better social networker than Clinton?

The Obama MySpace profile speaks directly to MySpacers, encouraging friends:

Who I'd like to meet:

Over 50,000 unsolicited friend requests! I'm inspired by the overwhelming support for Illinois Senator Barack Obama. If your friend request hasn't been approved yet, be patient! All friend requests will be approved : )

The Clinton MySpace profile, on the other hand, favors the promotion of dozens of third-party Website links about Clinton and the Democratic party.

John Edwards calls his MySpace friends “Pals.” He has 12,319 of them (John Edwards: Be my MySpace pal!)

What about Joe Biden? His campaign is picking up “User Generated Politics” steam (slowly), at MySpace.

One month ago I asked, “Joe Biden has 226 MySpace friends: Can he connect?” Since then, Biden has connected with 366 more MySpacers: Biden now counts 592 MySpace friends!

Republican candidates are trailing the Democrats overall at MySpace, big time:

Rudy Giuliani, 928 friends
John McCain, 340 friends
Mitt Romney, 308 friends

DOES IT MATTER?

WILL POPULARITY IN MYSPACE MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN CAMPAIGN 2008?
