Has Google really succeeded in making advertising something YOU want to see?  

Google touts "Gmail isn't a traditional webmail account":

There are no pop-ups, untargeted banner ads or warnings urging you to buy more storage. Gmail, however, will often place a few highly relevant, text ads adjacent to the body of your email.

Google summarizes for Gmail: "It has ads. But only good ads."
