In August, I announced Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s television ambitions; “Google CEO wants $74 billion TV ad market”:

Google CEO Eric Schmidt believes television viewers should not have to stand for tv commercials that are “a waste of your time.” Schmidt is frustrated that “When you watch the television you see ads that are clearly not targeted for you.”

What does he plan to do about it?

Google is preparing to deliver “targeted measurable television ads” and Schmidt says Google has “a good shot at it.

Google has just taken its first shot, a multi-year broadband alliance with British Sky Broadcasting (BSkyB), the:

“first global deployment of Google’s suite of world-class search, communications and video tools."

Sky and Google will collaborate in: Video, Communications and Search & Advertising.

VIDEO

Sky will launch a multi-platform, User Generated Video portal using Google’s syndicated video content upload tools. The site will allow users to edit, upload and share their own video content, including uploads and downloads from mobile phones.

COMMUNICATIONS

Sky Broadband customers will be offered a customized version of Google’s email product, using the ‘@sky.com’ email address, and other communications applications such as contacts, calendar, and instant messaging. Future deployments may include Google’s VoIP services, enhanced storage and other possible future product developments.

SEARCH & ADVERTISING

Google will power search and targeted search advertising across Sky’s portfolio of online sites. Revenue generated by click-throughs on sponsored links will be shared between Sky and Google. Discussions are ongoing for future forms of Web, TV and mobile advertising.

BSkyB CEO James Murdoch underscored:

People say you've got your Internet stuff and your TV stuff. The truth is that in a connected marketplace all media is connected. All media owners, Internet, television, or whatever it is, have a huge amount to play for in delivering the most efficient marketing and advertising solution that there can be.

BSkyB has chosen to play on Google's team.
