Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 may not be Vista-compatible

Microsoft’s own Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack (SP) 1 – a first beta of which went live on September 26 — may not work correctly with Windows Vista.

That revelation (admirably) comes courtesy of the blog of Microsoft’s Corporate VP of the company’s developer division, S. Soma Somasegar. Somasegar blogged:

Visual Studio 2005 SP1 will run on Vista but will likely have a few compatibility issues. We are working with the Vista team to understand those, to provide workarounds where possible and also work on providing you with a set of fixes beyond SP1.

“We had a choice to make internally – hold up VS 2005 SP1 till we get the fixes in or decouple and ship VS 2005 SP1 as soon as possible knowing that we have to provide fixes for some of those Vista compatibility issues later. Based on your feedback of having SP1 for VS 2005 soon, we decided to separate the two.”

The first beta version of Visual Studio 2005 SP1 is available for download by select technical beta testers with access to Microsoft Connect.

Somasegar blogged that Microsoft’s goal is to release the final version of VS 2005 SP1 in the next three to four months. Earlier this year, Microsoft officials said they planned to release the final version of VS 2005 SP1 in the third calendar quarter of 2006.

It will be interesting to see which of Microsoft’s other applications and products will encounter compatibility problems with Vista
