Windows 7 was the big news of the week and James, Kevin, and I started off MobileTechRoundup show #186 talking about this latest Microsoft operating system. Hopefully James doesn’t really go try to eat a Burger King Whopper 7 today. I talked a bit more about the Nokia N900 now that I have had this mobile Linux computer for almost 2 weeks. The other big news of the week was the Barnes & Noble Nook and James sounds like he is as excited as me, although I am the only one who placed a pre-order so far. Amazon didn’t want to be left out of the ebook news and also announced Kindle for PC this week.

We missed recording last week due to the Mobilize 2009 event so MobileTechRoundup show #182 is a bit longer than normal as James, Kevin, and I chatted about mobile tech products. James and Kevin had a chance to play with the upcoming T-Mobile Motorola CLIQ Google Android device that will be tough for me to resist. I talked about my new Zune HD and iPod nano and then I learned about Opera 10’s Turbo Mode on a PC. Opera Mini 5 beta is out for Java-enabled phones and adds some great new features, all for FREE. James also had a chance to swing by the HP offices and play with the new Envy notebooks that have features you may envy, but at a price you may not.

Viliv X70 ultra portable PC available soon for $599
Fellow MoTR podcast host James Kendrick has been playing with the new Viliv X70EX ultra portable computer that looks quite attractive and portable. I just read on jkOnTheRun that the ViliV X70EX will be available for $599 over at Dynamism.
$599 seems to be a reasonable price for a compact Windows XP computer with a 7″ WSVGA display (1024×600), 16GB SSD drive, Intel Atom 1.2 GHz processor, 5+ hour battery life (in video playback mode), integrated GPS, Bluetooth, and WiFi with an option for HSPA via a SIM, and more. The processor and drive upgrade models do not have pricing yet, but when you look at the Viliv S5 with smaller display priced at the same entry price this seems like a pretty good deal.
I personally think I may get one of those new 13″ MacBook Pro devices to replace my aging original 15″ MacBook Pro.

MobileTechRoundup show #170, Viliv S5, Quickoffice for iPhone, 1 billion App Store downloads

Kevin and I both have the MSI Wind netbook and don’t agree with Apple’s statement about them being junky, nor do millions of others, as we talked about at the start of MobileTechRoundup show #170. James has been looking at the Viliv S5 ultra portable and his articles have me quite interested in the device. He actually found it so impressive and useful that he decided to buy on for himself. We also chatted about QuickOffice for the iPhone along with apps that each of us use on each of our iPhone devices every day. Apple passed the 1 billion application download mark this past week too, which is quite an accomplishment no matter how you look at it.

Sprint had a huge launch buildup for the Samsung Instinct and in MobileTechRoundup show #169 we question where all the marketing is for the upcoming Palm Pre. I had a chance to chat a bit about the fantastic Nokia E75 I am testing out. James just received the Vilev S5 UMPC after we recorded the show, but was pretty excited about checking out the device when we recorded this morning. Kevin also has a new laptop, the HP dv2, and it sounds like a nice device between a netbook and a full blown desktop replacement laptop. I was also happy to report that there are now two high-powered Twitter clients for the S60 platform that I also put up against each other on my Nokia Experts site.

Kevin and Matt spent a few days at CTIA last week and we started out MobileTechRoundup show #168 chatting about our impressions of the event. It was our first CTIA, but there was a lot to see for both of us. Some photos of the CrunchPad Tablet were revealed just before the show so we talked a bit about this and whether or not a new Nokia Tablet was something that would be viable too. James is a serious eReader fan and brought up the news that Barnes & Noble may be coming out with their own Kindle competitor that may further explain their purchase of Fictionwise/eReader. Invites also went out for a T-Mobile press event on 21 April. Is this the T-Mobile G2 Android device?

MobileTechRoundup show #164, Kindle on iPhone and ebook moves

We really tried to move onto another topic this week, but Amazon was quick to release the iPhone Kindle applications so James, Kevin, and I chatted a bit more about ebooks in MobileTechRoundup show #164. We then discussed content and partnerships with Apple, Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Fictionwise. There seems to be a lot happening in the ebook space and James is a bit worried about his content. We also talked about Android on a netbook and the BlackBerry App World pricing.

The availability of the Kindle 2 was the big tech news of the week and James, Kevin, and I chatted about my Kindle 2 and our thoughts on the new ebook reader in MobileTechRoundup show #163. We also chatted about the ebook options on the iPhone and other mobile devices, including Stanza and eReader. Priced Android apps are also now available, but it sure seems like hardware and software is progressing slowly here. James introduced a new freeware, Doubletwist, that actually looks like a lifesaver for me and all my mobile devices as it brings you the capability to transfer media content from your Mac to a number of mobile devices, with conversion integrated in the software. BTW, DVD Jon is a part of this software so that tells you something.

MobileTechRoundup show #160, thoughts on the CrunchPad

The beta 2 version of the CrunchPad is being tested out and James, Kevin, and I offered our opinion on the device on MobileTechRoundup show #160. We all had fairly similar thoughts on the current design of the device. In thinking about accessing the internet and backing up your information we discussed cloud syncing solutions like SugarSync and ZumoDrive.

MobileTechRoundup show #158, Wrapping up 2008 and predictions for 2009

Kevin, James, and I decided to make MobileTechRoundup show #158 a bit longer since it will be our last one of 2008. You can listen to our thoughts on what we thought was the best of 2008 in the mobile space. We also offered up some predictions for 2009. Look for shorter, more focused podcasts in 2009 too since we realize that people’s time is precious and 30 to 40 minutes per show may be too much for casual listening. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
