The mobile web is much better than it was 10 years agoFor those of us who have been using mobile devices for 10 years or more we can recall the days when we had cables connected from our PDAs to our basic cell phones that connected us to the web through our ISP dial-up numbers. I used to surf with a Palm IIIx connected to a Qwest Kyocera phone at a blazing 14.4 kbps. IMHO, the mobile web has come a LONG way in 10 years and I have to agree with Russell Beattie (FYI, explicit language contained in his post) who made a post in response to a blog entry that made TechMeme regarding the mobile web.

I am actually quite satisfied with the 140 kbps EDGE speeds I see on T-Mobile and those on 3G get much better speeds than this. You used to have to search for mobile formatted sites, but now anyone who has any sense has a mobile formatted web page. I actually surf for over 2 hours a day (I have a long commute) on mobile devices and understand that there are limitations on mobile devices. How can you expect a desktop experience on a mobile phone? If you want a full browsing experience then you’ll have to surf on a UMPC or laptop with a much larger display. Browsers have made significant improvements in the mobile world. Just take a look at the iPhone and S60 Safari-based browsers and the excellent Opera Mini web browser.

People work very hard to create content for the web and advertising is the primary vehicle for giving people back a few bucks for all their efforts. I don’t mind most ads since I believe people should be reimbursed for their work and if you don’t like the ads, then visit other sites or donate to your favorite sites.

The mobile web isn’t perfect, but it is a LOT better than it was and is getting better all the time.

What do you think of the current mobile web?
