Google Maps for S60 now available
Even though I have the iPhone and other smartphones in hand, I keep going back to the Nokia N95 and usually have it in my bag if not in my hand. I like the availability of 3rd party applications and was very pleased to read on Symbian Guru that there is finally a stand-alone Google Maps application for Nokia S60 devices. You simply visit www.google.com/gmm on your S60 device. Palm and Windows Mobile users have had this for a while and S60 owners have had a very functional Java client available, that has actually provided critical directions to me a couple of times. The best benefit with this new stand-alone application is that the integrated GPS receiver on the Nokia N95 is now supported. I also found performance to be much snappier with this application than with the Java client and imagine I’ll be using it more since it has traffic update support too.
While I included a couple of screenshots of Google Maps running on my N95, you can check out many more screenshots and thoughts at All About Symbian. The Google Maps application supports saving search results to your Contacts and hyperlinking to web addresses in your search results. There is no voice navigation support, but it looks like a fine application that is available for free and is very fast.
